After a relatively quiet opening round that saw very few upsets, the second round match ups produced some shocking upsets as well as an unprecented three, that's right 3! ties that had to be settled by the tried and true American method of a coin flip and the decision to let Madame Fate make her choice.
The president's bracket has seen the greatest upsets as #1, #3 and #4 seeds have all been eliminated. Ronald Reagan, the great communicator has upset and eliminated #1 seed the great emancipator Abraham Lincoln. Over the years, Reagan has proven to be a burr in the saddle for Lincoln. Reagan advances to go head to head with Franklin Roosevelt. FDR won a coin flip challenge with his cousin Teddy Roosevelt to advance to the sweet 16. John F Kennedy had nothing to fear but fear itself as he rolled into the sweet 16 with an upset victory over #3 seed Thomas Jefferson. The highest seed remaining in this bracket is our nation's first president George Washington who advanced with 78.8% of the votes.
In the innovators bracket, there were several upsets as well. Top seed Henry Ford survived the challenging 1 vs 8 match up vs Alexander Graham Bell. The 4 vs. 5 match up is always close and none can be closer than a 50-50 split between the Wright Brothers and Albert Einstein. The coin landed on the Wright Brothers and they advance. Destiny's darling #6 seed Nikola Tesla won an "electric" match up (wait for it....) with Thomas Edison. (Get it now....). Tesla will do battle with #7 seed Bill Gates who knocked off #2 seed Ben Franklin. Gates allegedly told Franklin to "go and fly a kite" following the contest.
In the Wild Card and Social Activists bracket the seeds held true to form as Muhammed Ali ko'd Babe Ruth; #4 seed Lewis and Clark were in no mood to compromise with Henry Clay. #2 seed Steve Jobs advanced easily over Steven Spielberg and in our final tiebreaker matchup, Lady Luck smiled upon Walt Disney who escaped with a victory over the very challenging Elvis Presley.
In the Social Activists Bracket, #1 and #2 seeds Martin Luther King and Jackie Robinson advanced with the highest vote total of any match up. #4 seed Eleanor Roosevelt advances to challenge King and #3 seed Frederick Douglass put a hurt on his abolitionist friend John Brown.
The sweet 16 match ups promise to be even more exciting!
